Requiem for the Earth

by Linda Entwistle/Epiphany

/
1.
Requiem aeternam dona eis Domine et lux perpetua luceat eis Kyrie eleison, Christe eleison
2.
Give us rest and peace, Lord This is our prayer. Grant that Your light continually shines. Lord, have mercy; Christ, have mercy. Give us rest and peace, Lord – this is our prayer. Give us rest and peace, Lord – this is our prayer. For all creation struggles for breath, the light for her task growing dim. What is her future – how will it end? Can we know there’s an end to all her pain? Give us rest . . . For all creation is bound up in chains awaiting her day of release. And in her labour; until that day comes to give birth to the new; A glorious new age. Give us rest . . .
3.
Our food is cut off, we have no supplies. Our grain has dried out beneath cloudless skies. Our cattle they wander about in despair. Fire has scorched and devoured their pasture. Even the streams are dying of thirst, The first angel has done his worst. The seas will become our grave and the mountains our tombstone – a memorial to us who paid no respect to creation. Darkness descends with the thickening clouds. The lights of the world snuffed out by a shroud. The hail and the rain is bitter and hard The earth sits in shame for her beauty is marred. Yet more volcanoes are ready to burst; the third angel has done his worst. The seas will become our grave and the mountains our tombstone – A memorial to us who paid No respect to creation.
4.
They live and die and every day sees death. The images are there before their eyes. When there is tragedy occurs on earth. They bow their heads; they cannot bear the cries. Then they turn away – then they turn away. People are displaced and driven from their homes through famine, earthquake, flood and civil riot. The ravaged earth must make her feelings known; She trembles from the oceans to the heights. Can you feel her pain – can you feel her pain? If only my people would care for her, tend her, make her garden grow. Instead they have defiled the ground on which they walk. They take but don’t give back, They spoil but make no amends, And every war fought takes a chunk out of her heart. (of her heart . . .)
5.
Dies Irae 03:25
Dies irae, dies illa, Solvet saeclum in favilla Dies irae, dies illa, Solvet saeclum in favilla. Rex tremendae majestatis, Qui salvandos salvas gratis, Rex tremendae majestatis, Salva me, fons pietatis. Day of anger, Day of terror, All shall crumble into ashes Day of anger, Day of terror, All shall crumble into ashes. King Almighty, omnipotent, You who saves the true repentant, King Almighty, omnipotent, Save me, fount of mercy, save me !
6.
Quid sum miser tunc dicturus. Quem patronum rogaturus. Cum vix justus sit securus ! Who shall plead on my behalf? It seems my actions haven’t been enough to deliver my heart from pain;, to free me from myself and all that I have sought to gain. We all come to the same fate; good and bad, high and low estate. Men’s love can’t make us happy, nor can any wealth. We simply cannot free ourselves. Quid sum . . . Only the Priest, the Great High Priest can release you from your sentence of death. He became the Lamb who sacrificed himself; He alone can plead of your behalf. Quid sum . . . King of Salem, King of Peace has gone through to the heavenly place. Although He is God’s son, He knows that we are weak. Through Him we can find mercy and grace. Quid sum . . . And on the cross His dripping blood Is a memorial to Him who through His love for creation, and through His pain washed it clean again with life that flowed from every vein.

Lamb of God 04:00
Every particle and every cell, carried by water into the well flowing into the heart of the dying earth who after labour might give birth. Lamb of God, You take away You take away the sin of the world Have mercy upon us, have mercy on us Lamb of God, You take away You take away the sin of the world O Lamb of God You take away the sin of the world Grant us Your peace!
8.
O God our Saviour, the hope of all the earth, from the depths of the sea to the mountain peaks. You breathe onto the lands and wrap them in Your love. You long for the nations to find Your peace. You care for the land and you water it You long to send the rain. You made a decision, you ordained it and still the land gives grain. O God our Saviour . . . Though evil remains in the heart of man You cannot curse the ground. This is what You pledged when at last the flood went down on that sacred mound. O God our Saviour . . .
9.
I Delight 03:33
Tell the land, "don’t be dismayed", And all creatures, "don’t be dismayed. The thirsty pasture will be green again. The Lord will send the autumn rain". I delight greatly in my Lord As a bride prepares herself to meet the one she loves. For he has clothed me with the garments of Shalom and has arrayed me with a robe of beauty. As the soil prepares to sprout new buds Soon the garden starts to grow and everything comes up. So will my Sovereign Lord make everything new. Just as it always should have been in the garden.

Reflection 02:46
11.
Pie Jesu 02:57
Pie Jesu Domine dona eis requiem. Pie Jesu Domine dona eis requiem dona eis requiem in aeternam
12.
Sanctus 03:33
Sanctus Dominus Sabaoth Pleni sunt choeli et terra – Gloria tua. Hosanna in excelsis!
13.
And on this mountain the Lord God Sabaoth will prepare a banquet for His people. And as He promised we will never have tasted food so good nor enjoyed such delicious wine. Such joy and laughter as we all sit down to dine, Taking our places at the seats he’s reserved For those who long to be where he is, And we’ll know that we have come home. And on this mountain the Lord God Sabaoth will remove the veil of mourning from our faces. And from this mountain, where His light can shine, He will dispel the shroud suffocating the earth. The Lord will remove all shame and all fear, And he will wipe every tear from every cheek. His presence will be ours to keep. Yes, we’ll know that we have come home. And on this mountain the Lord God Sabaoth will take the great burden from our shoulders. His Word proves his knowledge as it cuts through the heart revealing all within the spirit and soul. All who are weary, come to Him for rest. Come to His table you afflicted and oppressed. Come for your healing – or just come to be blessed And to know that you have come home. The Lord will remove all shame and all fear, And He will wipe every tear from every cheek. His presence will be ours to keep. Yes, we’ll know that we have come home.

The Arrival 01:30
16.
Come, let us sing to the Lord, the Rock of our salvation. Come before His presence to praise Him with the best of our songs. For the Lord is a great God - A great King above all gods. In His hands are the caverns of the earth; all the contours of the hills are part of His plan. He made the sea and moulded the land; for there is nothing our of His span... Come, let's bow down on our knees before the Lord our maker. For He is God and we are the sheep of His hand. Oh, that today you would hear - that you would hear His voice. In His hands... So let's bow down on our knees before the Lord our maker. For He is God and we are the sheep of His hand. Oh, that today you would hear - that you would hear His voice. In His hands... Oh that you would hear, that you would hear His voice. Oh that you would hear, that you would hear His voice.
17.
So Today 04:21
So today ‐ If you hear his voice, do not close your heart But lift your head, And feel his breath stirring in your soul. In you is light, in you is peace Now your time has come To rise and shine in his pure light As the world around grows dim. For today you will see the Promised Land where all living things can live in peace and walk hand in hand. And as you take the lonely path no‐one else has come, He will brighten up your way with his Morning Sun. So today, if you feel him near, let Him give you strength, And don’t deny what he can do through the Spirit’s power. His crown of light, his robe of peace which he’s given you can make a difference to this world where all will be renewed. For today is the Day of Sabbath hope Where healing can begin in the light of His love. This day of toil, this life of pain has reached an end. Now all the world can at last find Requiem.

Written by Linda Entwistle and orchestrated by Peter Richards, this is a wonderful large-scale piece with full orchestra, rhythm section, choir and Linda Entwistle as soloist. This work is full of beautiful melodies and is an enjoyable mixture or classical and contemporary music. It looks at the crisis facing our world but carries an overall message of hope as the story ends with renewal.
